The dashboard Tao: YOUR COMPANION ON THE ROAD

It occurred to me some years ago, after reading William Martins’ - Ancient Advice for the Second Half of Life, that there were many other aspects of our daily living that could do with the same attention he gives to getting older. In Tai Chi, we pay attention to our bodies and mind in movements and forms. But what about other areas of life?

So I began, like many before me, to write an interpretation of the Tao Te Ching (more news on that new book, soon) and as the project got underway, I found myself drawn to a number of paths that were worth exploring separately.

One of these was the idea of contemporary travelling - not backpacking around Asia, nor cruising the Caribbean, but rather simply going to and from work, the shops, the park, A daily activity by car, by bike or on foot.

Why were we overlooking these endless opportunities for testing and honing our skills. Why were we not focussing on the training ground beneath our feet?

So I created a short audio/email course. Each weekday, for 20 days you receive an audio nugget, playing with the ideas of the Tao and travel: and its called the Dashboard Tao.

Each simple, 1 minute audio message, is a pause in the noise. A reminder that movement — like in Tai Chi — doesn’t have to mean rushing. It can mean listening. Noticing. Yielding. Even enjoying the red lights.

This is the first in a series of digital offerings that bring the core of Taoist thinking into modern, everyday life. Each one will take a simple, practical theme — like travel, movement, decision-making, or stillness — and unpack it in a way that feels light, grounded, and useful.

If you’ve studied Tai Chi with me, you’ll know this has always been the heart of the practice: how we move, how we rest, and how we navigate the chaos of daily life with just a little less force.

So whether you’re a driver, walker, cyclist, or coffee-fuelled wanderer —The Dashboard Tao is your companion on the road.
